Community/ YASS
Youth Art Saturday School is a partnership between Old Dominion University Art Education preservice teachers, The Chrysler Museum of Art, The Hermitage Museum and Gardens, and The Virginia MOCA! YASS classes explore various media including painting, digital media, ceramics, drawing, fibers, and more. Classes draw connections between works at each museum, permanent collections, big ideas and socially relevant concepts that relate to the young people of today. Age groups and registration requirements for this year's YASS are listed here.
Setting the Table: Food for Thought
This Youth Art Saturday School (YASS) is a three-week workshop created to form connections and explore one's cultural identity inspired by shared food and experience. Children grades 3rd-5th will explore The Chrysler Museum's current exhibition Farm to Table: Art, Food, and Identity in the Age of Impressionism as well as paintings from their permanent collection. Further, playful museum activities will help students engage with the museum’s collection. Ultimately, along with daily warmups, students will create their own abstract and representational paintings. They will experiment independently and collaboratively to create these meaningful works of art. These exercises will encourage students to explore their own identity, culture, and exercise inclusivity over the course of three Saturdays, each from 10am to 1pm: October 19th, October 26th, and November 2nd. Signup includes all three days, as each lesson builds on the prior days and ultimately leads to a final display of student work!
Setting the Table: Food for Thought is presented by ODU Art Education seniors, Artist Ojeriakhi, Isabella Thompson, and Rachel Vredenburg.
